Secretary Del Toro is responsible for the welfare of more than 900,000 sailors, Marines, reservists, and civilian personnel. While in town, he hosted a dialogue with small business defense contractors in which he discussed the various challenges of working with the federal government and the actions being taken by the Department of Defense to improve those conditions. Following the event, Mr. Ian Scott, President & CEO of the Beaufort Regional Chamber, had the opportunity to highlight all the work being done by the Military Enhancement Committee and the Governor’s Military Base Task Force to support the region’s installations and servicemembers.

The Military Enhancement Committee (MEC) of Beaufort County Support Fund is a charitable fund administered by the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry. Its mission is to enhance the quality and value of the military installations of Beaufort County, namely, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, Naval Air Station Beaufort, and Beaufort Naval Hospital. The MEC seeks to defend these installations against any threats like closure or natural disaster, while also positioning them for enhancement through personnel, resources, and other opportunities that both benefit the Department of Defense and our region.
