DOD INVESTING HEAVILY IN OUR INSTALLATIONS IN FISCAL YEAR 2022

Recent actions by Congress impacting the Department of Defense in Beaufort should be seen as a good sign of what’s to come. The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) is the legislation Congress passes each year to make changes to the policies and organization of United States defense agencies and provides guidance on how military funding can be spent. The NDAA for Fiscal Year 2022 (FY22) was signed into law on December 27, 2021. Contained within the bill are several investments into MCAS Beaufort and MCRD Parris Island including $122 million for construction of a new F-35 aircraft maintenance hangar at the air station and $6 million for security and infrastructure improvements to the Parris Island entry control facility. The Beaufort Regional Chamber and Military Enhancement Committee co-signed letters to Senators Graham and Scott, and Representatives Mace, Clyburn and Wilson similar to the one found here.

The Military Enhancement Committee (MEC) of Beaufort County Support Fund is a charitable fund administered by the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry. Its mission is to enhance the quality and value of the military installations of Beaufort County, namely, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, Naval Air Station Beaufort, and Beaufort Naval Hospital. The MEC seeks to defend these installations against any threats like closure or natural disaster, while also positioning them for enhancement through personnel, resources, and other opportunities that both benefit the Department of Defense and our region.
